Our students’ interview sheds light on the issue of gender stereotypes and how they affect our daily lives, shaping our experiences by limiting freedom of expression and personal choices.
Through a meaningful and well-structured discussion, the podcast also highlights the connection between stereotypes and school bullying, explores initiatives and actions that promote equality, examines the role of social media in either perpetuating or challenging these stereotypes, and brings forward historical examples where stereotypical perceptions were overturned.
This project goes beyond simply analyzing the problem—it gives a voice to the younger generation, suggesting ways in which children and young people can become agents of change, contributing to a society free from discrimination, built on respect, acceptance, and equal opportunities for all.

Journalist: Good evening… and welcome to today’s podcast!
I’m excited to have you with us as we continue our school’s initiatives under the theme “Together for a school and a society without discrimination.”
Within this framework, we focus on topics that impact our daily lives, society, and our relationships.
Today's topic is gender stereotypes—an issue that often goes unnoticed but has a profound impact on our lives.
We are delighted to have with us today Ms. Eleni Papadopoulou, a psychologist with expertise in social behavior, who will help us better understand our topic.
Ms. Papadopoulou, welcome, and thank you for being here!

Psychologist: Good evening, and thank you very much for the invitation.

Journalist: Ms. Papadopoulou, to begin, could you explain what gender stereotypes are?

Psychologist: Gender stereotypes are predetermined and generalized beliefs assigned to genders. These beliefs define social roles, meaning how someone is "expected" to behave, dress, or live based on their gender.
For example, there is a prevailing notion that boys, unlike girls, should not cry or express their emotions, as this is seen as a sign of weakness—something that does not align with their gender.

Journalist: How do these stereotypes affect our daily lives?

Psychologist: That’s a very important question. Gender stereotypes force people to live according to societal expectations and follow predefined roles that do not always align with their desires or abilities. This can cause emotional stress and anxiety.
Many times, self-esteem is affected, as those who do not meet these "social expectations" feel they are not "good enough" or even that they are failures.
For example, a man who has not achieved professional success or does not earn a high income for his family may feel inadequate. Similarly, a woman who prioritizes her career over having children may face social criticism for not adhering to the traditional role assigned to her.
It is also important to emphasize that stereotypes limit people’s personal choices. A boy may hesitate to pursue modern dance because it is not considered appropriate for his gender, while a girl may be discouraged from following a career in science or technology, as these fields are traditionally seen as more suitable for men.

Journalist: Do you think there are also consequences for society?

Psychologist: Absolutely. Gender stereotypes create many forms of discrimination and social inequality.
For example, women often bear more household responsibilities, even though they work just as much as men. This happens because of the deeply ingrained belief that a woman’s role is to care for the family.
Additionally, women often have fewer professional opportunities or receive lower pay than men, even when performing the same work with the same skills and qualifications.
Gender stereotypes also impact relationships and reinforce violence against women, as they are perceived as more "vulnerable." Men, on the other hand, may feel pressured to constantly prove their strength, leading to toxic behaviors.

Journalist: Is there a connection between gender stereotypes and school bullying?

Psychologist: Absolutely. Gender stereotypes are directly linked to school bullying, as they often become the basis for targeting students who do not conform to social norms.
A boy who is sensitive and does not play football or a girl who excels in mathematics and prefers sports may face teasing or social exclusion from their peers.
Additionally, stereotypes reinforce toxic masculinity, promoting aggressive behaviors. The result is an environment that encourages bullying and marginalizes children who feel different.

Journalist: What can we do to break these stereotypes?

Psychologist: It is crucial to promote gender equality from an early age through education. Children should be encouraged to express themselves freely and pursue their interests without gender-based restrictions.
Public awareness through media and social networks—by promoting roles that challenge traditional gender norms—can also help reduce stereotypes and create a more equal society.
Finally, awareness campaigns and initiatives are essential in changing public perceptions.

Journalist: Do you have examples of such initiatives?

Psychologist: Absolutely. Various organizations use slogans like “Strength lies in diversity” and “Respect has no stereotypes.”
The European Union launched a campaign in July 2023 aimed at highlighting the harmful effects of gender stereotypes and promoting gender equality in an inclusive society. At the same time, it utilizes social media to spread its message, encouraging public participation through dialogue, actions, and informative content.

Journalist: Do you think social media has helped change perceptions, or do they reinforce stereotypes?

Psychologist: Social media has given a voice to groups that promote equality and acceptance of diversity. However, they also contribute significantly to the perpetuation of certain gender stereotypes by continuing to showcase traditional roles.
That’s why it’s important to be critical of what we see and read online.

Journalist: How can children our age contribute to this change?

Psychologist: Great question! Children and teenagers can be the best advocates for change.
You can start by challenging stereotypes around you. If you see a friend doing something different from what is "expected" for their gender, support them and do not engage in criticism.
Also, talk to your parents, teachers, and classmates about the importance of equality.
And, of course, through the internet and social media, you can support initiatives that promote acceptance and diversity.

Journalist: Are there historical examples where stereotypes were broken, helping society evolve?

Psychologist: Many! One of the most well-known examples is the period when women won the right to vote. This change did not happen easily—it took struggles and sacrifices from both women and men who believed in equality.
Another example is the social changes of the 20th century when women entered the workforce in large numbers, breaking the stereotype that they belonged only at home.

Journalist: What is your final message for us, the children and young people growing up in a world full of stereotypes?

Psychologist: My message is simple but very important: have courage and be yourselves.
Do not let stereotypes limit your dreams and choices. Challenge stereotypes, support diversity, and help create a world where everyone has equal opportunities, regardless of their gender.
