at the same time, we will propose simple daily and easy-to-implement actions aimed at reducing the ecological footprint of our clothes.
The podcast was created by a student in the class as part of the lab skills lesson on her own initiative.

“Hello! I’m Stavroula, and welcome to our podcast! Today, we’re going to talk about fast fashion. Yes, that trend that brings us cheap and stylish clothes in stores, but… do you really know what happens before these clothes reach our hands? Let’s find out!”

Part 1: What is Fast Fashion?

“Let’s start with the basics. Fast fashion is the trend where companies release new clothing collections almost every week. You see something in the shop window, buy it for a low price, and after a short time… it fades, tears, or simply goes out of style. Sounds familiar, right? Why do we call it ‘fast’? Because these clothes are produced very quickly and in massive quantities. And yes, that may seem great! We always have something new to wear. But… there’s a darker side to it.”

Part 2: What’s Hidden Behind Fast Fashion?

“This is where things get tough.
1. The People Who Make Our Clothes
Did you know that most of the clothes we buy are made in factories far away from us, in countries like Bangladesh, India, and China? Many workers there work extremely long hours in terrible conditions and get paid very little. In some cases, even children are involved in this labor.
2. The Environmental Impact
Fast fashion is harming our planet. For example:
• It takes thousands of liters of water to make just one pair of jeans.
• The chemical dyes used in clothing production end up in rivers, turning the water into poison for the people and animals living nearby.
• Clothes made from synthetic materials, like polyester, release microplastics when washed. These microplastics end up in the ocean, where fish consume them—yes, the same fish we eat!
3. The Clothes We Throw Away
We constantly buy new clothes, but what happens to the old ones? Most of them end up in landfills, and some fabrics take hundreds of years to decompose.”

Part 3: What Can We Do?

“Don’t worry! We don’t have to stop wearing nice clothes, but we can make small changes that help both the planet and people.
1. Buy Less, but Better
Instead of buying lots of cheap clothes, invest in fewer, high-quality pieces that last longer.
2. Give Your Clothes a Second Life
Before throwing away an item, think! Can you donate it, repair it, or even transform it into something new?
3. Shop Second-Hand
Thrift stores have amazing finds! You can discover unique pieces while also helping the environment.
4. Before You Buy, Ask Questions
Who made this piece of clothing? Where was it made? What materials were used? Many brands are now adopting ethical practices—look for and support those that care for both workers and the environment.
5. Support Local Businesses
And most importantly, before buying something new, ask yourself: Do I really need this?”
