Through hands-on experience, students will have the opportunity to create multilingual podcasts, developing their critical thinking, communication, and storytelling skills in the digital era.
By amplifying their voices, this program encourages young participants to express their perspectives, engage with diverse viewpoints, and navigate the media landscape responsibly. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of how media shapes society while empowering students to become active and informed digital citizens.

A: Good evening, everyone! I’m Giannis, and you’re tuned in to our podcast, “Listen to What They Said.” Today, inspired by Stratis Doukas’ book The Story of a Prisoner, we will discuss the different aspects of captivity. Joining me today are Nausicaa and Christos. Good evening, guys.
B: Good evening, Giannis. Today’s topic is particularly interesting. Captivity is a concept that, as we will see, extends to many aspects of our lives.
C: Good evening from me as well. While our starting point is Stratis Doukas’ book, we won’t focus solely on it. We’ll explore various examples from literature, music, and everyday life.

A: Let’s get started! In The Story of a Prisoner, the author presents a protagonist who experiences captivity in its most literal and profoundly real sense.
B: Indeed, this character, following the destruction of Smyrna, becomes a prisoner of the Turks. Through his eyes, we witness fear, uncertainty, but also the hope he struggles to keep alive.
C: He tries to hold onto his humanity and clings to anything that remains human.

C: However, captivity isn’t just about physical imprisonment. It’s something we all experience in our daily lives. Many of our classmates admitted feeling addicted to certain habits, such as coffee, alcohol, and nicotine.
A: In the research we conducted at our school, many also mentioned the stress of daily life as a form of captivity.
B: Now, let’s hear one of our classmates’ perspectives on captivity in today’s world.

C: He’s absolutely right! His words reminded me of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. In the story, the protagonist wakes up one morning to find he has turned into an insect. At first, it seemed quite bizarre to me, but now I understand: it wasn’t about literal transformation, but about the feeling of losing oneself.
A: Kafka describes how work, societal expectations, or family obligations can make you feel like a stranger in your own life. And honestly, I’ve felt this way many times—drowning in studying, routine, and the expectations of teachers, friends, and parents, losing sight of who I truly am.
B: Think about how often we feel trapped by the "shoulds" imposed on us by others—or even by ourselves.

A: Let’s now listen to another classmate’s opinion on captivity in today’s world.

B: I’ve been in that position so many times…
C: Oh, tell me about it! Sometimes, we become so obsessed with something that we neglect other equally important responsibilities.
A: Don’t you agree that this, too, is a form of captivity?
B: Absolutely! The results of our survey showed that the majority of students have less than three hours of free time each day. Additionally, about 80% of them spend those few hours on social media.
C: If that’s not captivity, then what is?
A: I completely agree! It’s like having your freedom stolen—even inside your own mind.

A: At this point, I’d like to revisit the topic of ‘everyday’ captivity, which affects many people. For example, addiction to mobile phones, smoking, alcohol, drugs, and even sex.
B: Unfortunately, addiction is so widespread that it can impact even our closest loved ones without us realizing it.
C: And here lies a difficult and frightening challenge: how do you help someone who has become a prisoner of their own habits?
A: A classmate of ours shared their perspective: “Knowing the danger doesn’t mean you can escape it. The key is having the will, support, and awareness.”

B: And now, we come to the most emotional form of captivity: love! We’ve all seen people become prisoners of a relationship.
C: Or those who, after a breakup, find it impossible to move on with their lives.
A: The students we surveyed agreed that toxic relationships are one of the hardest forms of captivity. They distance you from your friends, your goals, and even from yourself.
B: And often, you don’t realize it until it’s too late.

A classic example of this is Noah, the protagonist of The Notebook. He was a prisoner of his love for a girl he had broken up with nearly seven years earlier!
